How it works

Give ConvertICO almost any picture and it becomes a proper Windows icon. The image is drawn onto a square canvas at each size you choose, so nothing gets stretched out of shape, and transparency carries through. HEIC photos from an iPhone are the one exception: a browser needs to be able to decode them first, so convert the photo to JPG or PNG on your device, or install a browser extension that adds HEIC support, then drop it here.

Questions people ask

What is an .ico file, and why not a plain PNG?

An .ico is a container that stores the same icon at several sizes in one file. Windows and older browsers reach into it and pick the size they need, so a 16-pixel tab and a large desktop shortcut both look sharp. A lone PNG is one fixed size, which is why favicons still lean on .ico.

Which favicon sizes do I actually need?

For most sites, a favicon.ico with 16, 32, and 48 covers browsers, plus a 180-pixel Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 PNGs for phones and installable web apps. The favicon generator builds all of that from one image, so you do not have to remember the list.

Do my images get uploaded anywhere?

No. Every tool reads the file with JavaScript and works on it in the page. There is no server endpoint that receives your picture, and closing the tab clears it. That holds for the paid ideas on the Pro page too until you deliberately use one.

Does transparency survive the conversion?

Yes. A transparent PNG or SVG stays transparent through to the .ico, the PNG set, and the .icns. If you would rather have a solid backdrop, the favicon tools let you add one.

Can I make a favicon without a logo?

Two ways. The text tool draws a favicon from a letter or two with a color and shape you pick, and the emoji tool turns any emoji into one. Both hand back the same package a real logo would.
